The move marks the latest wrinkle in the evolving story for Chinese solar panel manufacturers, which are quickly becoming their own best customers by selling their products to solar plants that they build themselves.

October undoes September: Ten clean energy stocks for 2015

Tom Konrad Ph.D., CFA

In the two months since my last "monthly" update, clean energy stocks fell precipitously in September and then recovered most of those losses in October, although not for the year. Income focused Yieldcos have been particularly badly hit, but my income heavy  Ten Clean Energy Stocks for 2015 model portfolio has done quite well in spite of this.

Two big new financing deals are shining a spotlight on a major shift taking place in the solar panel sector, with manufacturers increasingly moving into the field of solar farm development. The shift is seeing solar panel makers become their own best customers, buying up panels for use in solar farms that they build themselves.

Keystone XL pipeline rejected, Obama announces

Great news today via the NY Times regarding the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline. President Obama took advantage of low gas prices and the resulting decline in US oil production to officially reject the construction proposal today. Since coming into office, Obama has made a strong push for a clean energy future, and shutting down Keystone XL after a 7-year battle could very well be the capstone on that effort.

China burning more coal than previously reported

Despite past governmental reporting and previous optimism, China has been burning more coal than it had previously reported. New figures released quietly by the Chinese Government this week shows that, more than simply burning more coal, China has been burning up to 17% more coal per year than the government had previously disclosed, laying to rest many hopes that the country was on a fast track to carbon dioxide emissions decline.

US cities where going electric saves the most money

Where in the US do electric vehicles make the sense? What about when? Where in the country does the total cost of ownership fall below that of conventional vehicles? A recent article from the International Council on Clean Transportation attempted to quantify the answers to some of these questions, giving us some new insights in that regard.

Solar installations boom in China, PV cells and modules manufactured under full capacity

China, the world’s largest solar PV market, has been soaring solar installations since the beginning of the third quarter. The installation boom became stronger in the fourth quarter, triggering price uptrend of PV cells and modules. Most PV cell and module manufacturers are producing products under their full capacities to meet the enormous orders.

Crowdfunding may cut `not in my backyard' risk for renewables

If you paid for it, you probably won’t be mad that it’s near your house. That, at least is what the proponents of green energy are saying. Crowdfunding, a way of raising money that asks the masses on the Internet to each chip in, is rising in the renewables industry. Traditionally used by charities, it has raised 165 million euros ($180 million) worldwide to develop 300 clean energy projects, according to a presentation at the Renewable Energy Crowdfunding conference in London on Nov. 5.

As US shutters aging nuclear plants, cutting emissions will become more costly

The U.S. is the world’s largest producer of nuclear power, but the country’s fleet of nearly 100 reactors is showing its age. On Nov. 2, the owner of a nuclear power station in New York said it will shut the plant down, which follows announcements of plant closures in Massachusetts, California, Florida and Wisconsin. This raises important questions for the U.S. energy sector.

Uptime key to improving wind turbine reliability

Given that maintenance for wind turbines involves the replacement of costly parts as well as time-consuming and dangerous ascents of turbines up to 100m tall, there is a constant focus within the industry on improving the reliability of these devices. Though it is impossible to predict all of the necessary maintenance in any device, taking a few steps whilst building turbines and during routine maintenance can reduce the risk of unscheduled downtime and the associated costs.

The $26 billion hole that has clean power scrambling for cover

Two years ago, yield companies like TerraForm Power Inc. and NRG Yield Inc. were the newest, hottest thing for energy investors – a way to make steady returns off the booming clean energy sector. Share values soared after they were spun off by parent companies eager to cash in. Today, those same parent entities have put as much as $26 billion worth of sales to their affiliates on hold after the market value cratered.

Germany could have 150 GW of solar capacity if it has 40 GW of energy storage

Reportedly, Germany has 35 GW of installed solar capacity and that could grow fairly soon to 52 GW. For the sake of comparison, the US has about 22 GW. A new analysis states that Germany could surpass its current level of installed solar with no problems, providing that one condition is met. You might have guessed what it is: more energy storage.

Infrastructure needed for 100% renewable electricity in Europe — New study explores the question

To reduce contributors to climate change and grow worldwide renewable electricity use, having the proper infrastructure in place is critical ingredient. Due to increasing environmental concerns, numerous studies report on the best ways to reduce GHG emissions. One of the most effective actions that can be taken is to reduce emissions by increasing the share of renewable energy sources in the electric sector and by increasing the share of electrification in some highly energy intensive sectors, such as transport and heating.
