Fresh blow for wind power in Australia

Another blow has been dealt to the wind power industry in Australia with the news that a Senate committee has advocated new limits to the subsidization of the technology.

The committee says energy subsidies for new wind farms should be limited to five years from more than 20 as it states that wind turbinetechnology was well developed and a “mature” industry. It also wants the issue of renewable energy certificates restricted to projects in states that adopt federal regulations on infrasound and low frequency noise.

The call for time limits on subsidies and federal noise oversight is another big setback for wind power in the country, already reeling from a federal government directive to the $10bn Clean Energy Finance Corporation that it stop lending to wind projects.

The final report of the Senate investigation into wind farms and their possible health effects will be tabled in parliament on Monday.
