Nordex is rapidly expanding its footprint in the emerging wind energy
market of Pakistan as it lands order after order to supply turbines to
several companies. Gul Ahmed Energy, a wind energy project developer in Pakistan, recently placed its first order
for wind turbines with Nordex. The German company will supply turbines
equivalent to 50 MW capacity for a project that will come up in the
Sindh.
Nordex has significant experience in working in the Pakistan market
and claims to be the leading supplier of wind turbines in the country.
The company secured its first order for 50 MW turbines in 2010 from a
subsidiary of Fauji Foundation. The turbines were supplied to the Jhampir wind energy project
owned by FFC Energy Limited. The project was set at a total cost of
$133.5 million and achieved commercial operation in May 2013. FFC Energy
sells power from the project at US¢15.33 per kWh.
Two other companies — Yunus Energy and Metro Power — also placed
orders for 100 MW each earlier this year. Both the companies will
develop the projects in the Sindh Province, right across the border
from the Indian states of Rajasthan and Gujarat, both of which are among
the leading wind energy states in India.
Wind energy is among the most rapidly growing power generation
sectors in Pakistan, which has been grappling with a mismatch in power
demand and supply. The government is now looking to significantly boost
development of renewable energy projects, as the country’s gestation
period for such projects is low. Pakistan has been working with several
Chinese companies, including China Three Gorges Corporation and Ming Yang Wind Power, to develop wind energy assets.
