Japan may restart at least two idled nuclear reactors in June

Japan is considering re-starting two idled nuclear power reactors located in the southwestern city of Sendai. Sendai has a population of more than one million people. In September, the Nuclear Regulation Authority, Japan’s primary nuclear regulator, approved that the reactors under the new and more stringent safety regulations adopted following the Fukushima meltdowns in 2011.

The Sendai reactors, which are operated by the Kyushu Electric Power Company, were the first reactors in the country to be approved under the new safety standards. All 48 commercial reactors in Japan, including the two at the Sendai complex, were idled in the wake of the Fukushima disaster. As soon as the local authorities give Kyushu Electric the green light, the Sendai reactors are set to be the first nuclear facilities to return to service in four years.
