In step with the rapidly changing business infrastructure of energy
utilities, Georgia Power has announced the launch of a new solar sales
and installation service for customers, beginning July 1. As an unregulated offering, the program is being administered by
Georgia Power Energy Services, a business unit that provides customers
with the turnkey installation of energy efficiency products. Georgia
Power is the largest subsidiary of Southern Company, one of America’s largest generators of electricity.
The state of Georgia is considered to be a fast-growing area for solar energy.
In a press announcement, Norrie McKenzie, vice president of renewable
development for Georgia Power said that “Georgia has one of the fastest
growing and most competitive solar markets in the country. Our new solar
offering further delivers on our commitment to provide the energy
choices our customers want and the world-class service they expect.” Georgia Power’s process makes it easy for customers to determine if
solar is right for them. The first step for residential customers
considering solar is to use an interactive tool on the Georgia Power website pertaining to solar.
A
Georgia Power solar energy expert will then contact interested parties
to discuss potential solar installations and estimated energy
savings. Customers choosing to move forward with installing solar can
use an installer of their choice or Georgia Power’s unregulated Energy
Services team, which will manage the solar installation and work
directly with the customer. If the customer decides not to move forward
with installing solar, then Georgia Power can provide information about
other customized energy solutions.
Thanks to constructive regulation and
a competitive marketplace, Georgia is leading the nation as one of the
fastest growing solar states. Through Georgia Power’s various solar
programs, the company is adding thousands of solar panels to Georgia’s
energy landscape. All of the company’s solar resources will have been
procured at costs designed to prevent upward pressure on rates and
ensure that solar offers the most value for Georgia Power customers.
Georgia Advanced Solar Initiuative
In November 2012, the Georgia Public Service Commission
approved the Georgia Power Advanced Solar Initiative (GPASI). The
initial goal of this solar program was to procure 210 MW of solar
capacity. The program has since expanded significantly. GPASI was
primarily created to spur economic growth within the solar community in
Georgia, while offering pricing that encourages more renewable
development.
