WASHINGTON, D.C. --
As the presidential election draws near, the National Hydropower
Association is urging those in the hydroelectric industry to let the
candidates know hydropower will continue to be a vital part of America's
energy future.
No matter who wins, NHA says, federal policies in support of
hydropower -- including regulatory improvements, incentives, and
research and development -- will be key in cementing hydro's place in
the nation's energy portfolio.
NHA has prepared letter templates for both President Barack Obama (D) and Governor Mitt Romney (R), which are available via the organization's website.

Advocacy for hydropower seems to be gaining support, as two pieces of hydroelectric regulatory legislation have been introduced before the U.S. House in recent months. The first, called the "Hydropower Regulatory Efficiency Act of 2012," passed the House with a unanimous vote in July.
A second act, called the "Saving our Dams and New Hydropower Development and Jobs Act," was introduced earlier this month.
Both would need presidential approval to be signed into law.
