Adobe, News Corp, Starbucks, Nokia among top 20 companies procuring renewable power

Wind energy technology provider Vestas has released a report mentioning the top 20 firms around the world in terms of consumption of renewable energy-based electricity in 2010. The top five companies are Kohl’s Corporation, Whole Foods Inc., Toronto-Dominion Bank, Swiss Reinsurance Limited and Nordea Bank AB. Other prominent companies using renewable energy-based electricity are Adobe Systems Inc., News Corp, Deutsche Bank AG, Starbucks, Metlife, Nokia, Allianz and Johnson & Johnson.

Significantly, Kohl’s Corporation and Whole Foods Inc. sourced 100 percent of their power consumption from renewable energy sources. Kohl’s Corporation procured over 1400 GWh and Whole Food Inc. procured over 800 GWh of renewable energy-based electricity in 2010.

Adobe Systems Inc. procured about 75 percent or 54 GWh of renewable energy-based electricity in 2010. Deutsche Bank and News Corp. procured 67 percent and 65 percent, respectively, of their electricity consumption from renewable energy sources while Starbucks and Nokia met 58 percent and 46 percent, respectively, of their energy consumption from renewable energy-based electricity.

Intel Corp. was the largest consumer of renewable energy-based electricity, procuring 1,493 GWh of clean power which constituted about 34 percent of its total power consumption. Citigroup Inc. and JP Morgan Chase & Co. met just over 10 percent of their total power consumption from renewable energy sources.

In terms of sectors, while technology firms continued to maintain lead in terms of largest consumers of renewable energy-based electricity, their share decreased slightly from last year. Financial sector, on the other hand, saw a significant growth in procurement of RE-based power. Bank of America and Bank of Montreal led the financial sector firms with over 200 percent increase RE-power procurement.

From the communications sector, Cisco Systems Inc. and Motorola Inc. met 27 percent and 18 percent of their power requirements from renewable energy sources. Among the technology sector giants, chip makers Intel Corp. and AMD procured 35 percent and 21 percent of their total energy consumption from renewable energy sources. Dell Inc. procured 28 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources.
