Siemens has announced yet another wind turbine order, this time for
56 wind turbines for the Galloper Wind Farm off the southeast coast of
England. Following on from yesterday’s announcement that Siemens would provide 47 of its new 7 MW offshore wind turbines for the 330 MW Walney Extension East project being developed by DONG Energy, Siemens has announced
that it has received an order for 56 of its 6 MW wind turbines for the
Galloper Wind Farm, set to be developed off the southeast coast of
England by its developers RWE, the UK Green Investment Bank, Macquarie
Capital, and Siemens Financial Services, each of whom own a 25% stake in
the project.
“We
are pleased that Siemens will again be supplying the six megawatt wind
turbines for an offshore wind power plant in the UK,” said Michael
Hannibal, CEO Offshore of the Wind Power and Renewables Division of
Siemens AG. “We are working hard on making the cost of power from
offshore wind power plants competitive with other ways of generating
electricity.” Siemens is suitably proud of their new products, having sold
around 300 of its SWT-6.0-154 wind turbines to UK and German projects.
Construction of the project is expected to begin in May 2017 with
delivery of the turbines, and prompt completion by March 2018 for the
project is being seen as integral to its success, so that the project
can still qualify for the UK’s Renewables Obligations Certificates. Siemens has been deeply involved in the Galloper Wind Farm, providing
25% of the total project equity, as well as supporting RWE with
development funding in the period leading up to financial close.
“The speed in which we achieved financial close, which included
securing debt investments from a club of commercial lenders, is
testament to the market’s appetite for well-structured offshore wind
investments and its confidence in Siemens’ technical and financial
expertise in this sector,” said Kirk Edelman, Head of Energ
