China has reportedly donated solar energy kit systems to Rwanda in a
move that is expected to bolster the East African country’s energy
sector.
Rural areas that have no access to the national power grid within
Rwanda’s Northern, Southern and Eastern provinces stand to benefit from
the 416 pieces of solar equipment (including solar modules, cabinets,
switchboards and batteries) valued at $642,304 claims a report on
ecns.com
Rwanda’s State Minister in charge of energy and water in the Ministry
of Infrastructure, Emma Francoise Isumbingabo, is quoted as saying,
“The kits will boost rural energy accessibility and ultimately improve
the well-being of the rural population.”
The report further details the country’s energy production target of
563 megawatts (MW) by 2017 and adds a statistic that 17 % of the
population has access to electricity. It is has been projected that 400 households will benefit. China’s ambassador to Rwanda, Shen Yongxiang, confirmed the support
of his country and said it formed part of what is said to be a framework
of ‘Eight New Measures to Strengthen China-Africa Cooperation.
