NEW YORK --
Google Inc. agreed to buy 407 megawatts of wind power from Warren
Buffett’s MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co., the technology company’s
largest deal to date for renewable energy.
The capacity will power Google’s Council Bluffs,
Iowa, data center, according to a statement from Des Moines-based
MidAmerican today. Terms weren’t disclosed. Google, along with Facebook Inc., Apple Inc., Intel Corp. and other companies, are buying buying power from renewable energy projects
to curb greenhouse-gas emissions. Google has agreed to buy more than a
gigawatt of clean power. Corporate data centers are significant
consumers of electricity.
MidAmerican will provide the capacity from multiple
wind farms that are part of its Wind VIII effort to add 1,050 megawatts
of wind energy in Iowa by the end of 2015. Facebook plans to run a data center set to open next
year in Altoona, Iowa, with wind power from MidAmerican. The company has
set a goal of getting a quarter of its power from renewable sources by
2015.
Google is also financing renewable energy,
and has invested more than $1 billion in 15 projects around the world
in an effort to promote wider use of clean power. “It’s not just our own
operations we want to green,” the company said today in a statement on
its website.
